Our History

A hall with a history

More than seventy years on, 19 Regent Street still does what it was built to do: bring people together. It started as a promise between thousands of mine workers — and became one of Sudbury's great gathering places.

Drag the timeline to explore

  1. 1946

    1946

A promise, fifty cents at a time

Twelve thousand members of Mine Mill Local 598 agreed to contribute $0.50 a month toward a building fund — roughly $9,000 a month in today's dollars, at a time when the average Canadian home cost just $6,600.

  2. A black-and-white photo of a large crowd gathered outside 19 Regent Street.

    1947

    19 Regent Street

With the fund growing, Local 598 purchased the property at 19 Regent Street that would become the union's home and the community's hall.

  3. A black-and-white photo of the newly built Mine Mill hall exterior and its main hall interior, dated 1952.

    1952

    Designed by Louis Fabbro

Designed by architect Louis Fabbro — also behind the Sudbury General Hospital, the Caruso Club and the DeMarco Building — the hall took four years to build and held its grand opening on September 30, 1952.

  4. A black-and-white photo of the 1952 grand-opening ceremony, with a speaker at a podium beneath a Mine-Mill Labor Temple banner.

    1952

    Unity, Peace, Security

The official opening of the Mine-Mill Labour Temple drew a packed house under banners reading “Unity · Peace · Security” — a statement of everything the building was meant to stand for.

  5. A black-and-white group portrait of members of the Mine Mill Local 598 Ladies' Auxiliary.

    1950s–60s

    The heart of the community

Through the fifties and sixties the hall was a community hub — dances, kids' programs, Saturday movies and Christmas parties. Its stage hosted Pete Seeger, Paul Robeson, Leonid Kogan, Utah Phillips, Charlie Angus and many more.
